Concussion Treatment Series Course 2: Post-Traumatic Headaches

This is the second course in a series on the treatment of patients with concussions and brain injuries. The course focuses on identifying post-traumatic headaches, how they differ from primary migraines, and why they don’t often respond well to standard headache treatments. We
will cover the hallmark signs of neuropathic pain and how to conduct bedside functional assessments of the somatosensory system as it relates to neuropathic pain and post-traumatic headaches. We will cover key acupuncture points for treating post-traumatic headaches and discuss specific herbal formulas to address brain blood vessel inflammation, microglial-mediated inflammation, glymphatic congestion, and improving microcirculation in the brain.

Concussion Treatment Series Course 3:

Course Description: This course covers the physiology of sensory integration in the central nervous system as it related to traumatic neck injuries. We will discuss functional examination of the neck and related sensory systems, balance testing, and research on the importance of neck strength for concussion prevention. We will cover the treatment of traumatic neck injuries using acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and topical applications, Tai Chi, kinesiotaping, and cervical proprioceptive retraining. Case studies will be presented that highlight the use of neurological testing and treatment strategies.

This course covers:
1) The physiology of sensory integration of the head and neck within the central nervous system
2) Neck strength and concussion prevention and outcomes
3) The overlap of symptoms from both concussions and traumatic neck injuries
4) The connection between neck injuries, balance, and dizziness
5) Methods for testing balance
6) Functional examination of the neck and other sensory and motor systems
7) Acupuncture
8) Topical herbal poultices
9) Chinese herbal formulas
10) Neurological rehabilitation through Tai Chi
11) Kinesiotaping
12) Cervical proprioceptive retraining

Improving Function of the Gut-Brain Axis with Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs

Course Description: What does Chinese medicine have to offer in the way of improving both brain function and gut function? In this course you will learn exactly that, along with the neuroscience behind the brain’s top-down modulation of gut function, and the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in digestive health. The connection between dysautonomia and Ying-Wei Disharmonies will be explained in the context of gut dysfunction. The use of acupuncture from a theoretical and modern neuroscience perspective will be provided.

This course covers:
• Regions of the brain involved in gut function
• Clinical presentation of dysautonomia
• Dysautonomia and Ying-Wei Disharmonies
• How to assess the autonomic nervous system
• The use of acupuncture and Chinese herbs for improving autonomic nervous system function
• Case studies
• Clinical gems

CARRICK INSTITUTE

Acupuncture & Neurology – The Integration of Chinese Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience (99A)

This program was designed for the Acupuncturist/Chinese medicine practitioner who wants to begin implementing functional neurology in their clinical practice. Patient healthcare is becoming increasingly more complex as patients are simultaneously experiencing a multitude of
illnesses, disorders, and diseases. Neurological disorders are on the rise in all age groups and neurodegenerative diseases are showing up in adults earlier than previously seen. Additionally, many of the conditions that acupuncturists treat on a daily basis are influenced by the nervous system.  The modern acupuncturist must know how to assess and influence the nervousness of their patients, and this program will teach you to do that with the tools you have and new tools
we will be adding to your toolbox.

Following this 2-day course, which is both lecture and hands-on practice, learners will have new methods for assessing patients and increased confidence in working with patients with neurologically influenced disorders.  This Carrick Institute course will enhance your
effectiveness through the integration of applied clinical neuroscience and Chinese medicine. Bring your practice to a whole new level of skill and expertise.

The 2-day class will address all of the following critical topics:

• Clinical neurology as an integral aspect of Chinese medicine
• Introduction of the concept of longitudinal levels of lesion
• Functions of the lobes of the brain
• Clinical assessments for the frontal lobes, cerebellum, and brainstem
• Practice sessions for bedside examination techniques
• Clinical applications of a cranial nerve exam
• Case studies
• Clinical gems
• Modern brain imaging research in acupuncture
